Purpose.Passion.People:5 Ways to Use a Daily Devotional

Self-help, Drama, Romance, Biography, Finance…

There are so many different types of books available to us. I probably have at least 5+ of each type on my bookshelf. Sometimes you’re in the mood for something specific. For example, when I’m on vacation, I usually love to grab a few mushy romance novels that I can swoon over and escape to a fantasy land, WHILE relaxing poolside. During the winter, when I want to curl up on the couch with my cup of tea, I enjoy a good drama.

In the mornings, I need something motivating and inspirational that’s going to help me get my act together and the day started on the right foot! A daily devotional usually works for me in the morning - HOWEVER devotionals are a great “go-to” ANYTIME of the day.

A devotional can be defined as a publication which provides a specific spiritual reading, sometimes it’s for each calendar day, OR based on a specific topic. Devotionals really do serve a variety of purposes and depending on the topic of the devotional you may use it differently.

At the end of March, I released a 30-day devotional, Purpose. Passion. People - a devotional to help you activate your purpose and build your personal brand. The book taps into 30 days of scriptures, messages and action items to help you remove the superficial ideas of personal branding and instead view it as a mechanism to mobilize the gifts and talents that God has blessed you with.

While writing this devotional, I was thinking about the many ways it could be used. Here are five ways you can use the devotional:

  1. Morning Meditation - You’re up early with your usual 6:30 am wake-up call, you make time for your 30 min workout AND you make time to read your daily devotional and meditate. This quiet morning time and reading allows you to spend time with God, get direction and MOTIVATION for the day. The devotional is the perfect tool to jump start the day.

  2. Brand Refresh - Yes, it’s time to reinvigorate your brand. You just transitioned to a new position at work, and you’re trying to navigate how to continue to position yourself. Okay, this is when you grab your daily devotional and realize that there are several messages that discuss, positioning yourself as a thought leader, or working on your elevator pitch and it gives you the reassurance that you need to help you remember the gifts and talents that God has blessed you with.

  3. Study Guide - You enjoy learning and you always make time to study books that align with your interests, your passion and fuel your purpose and your spirit. Yes, Wednesday night bible study has been good, however in addition to what you’re learning in bible study, the devotional offers you scriptures that you can study, messages for the day that you can also study AND then specific action items to help you apply what you’ve just studied. You can use your daily devotional as a study guide for your purpose, passion and for your brand.

  4. Self - Motivation - Lately you’ve been feeling like you’ve lost a little bit of your Mojo. Ideas aren’t coming to you as quickly as before, you’re feeling like you’ve been doing more troubleshooting, rather than offering solutions. Maybe you’ve hit several roadblocks recently and your motivation meter is almost on “E”. This is when you grab the devotional, dust yourself off and keep pushing forward toward your goals!

  5. Bedtime Wind down - What a day, you’ve finally made it to bed, but you can’t get to sleep yet. So you flip through your devotional to find a calming passage, that reminds you to “Pray for Peace”, but it also get’s you excited about getting your rest because your mental, physical and spiritual wellness all contribute to your core being, so you need to take care of yourself.

Devotionals seem to always be very timely and relevant. Given what you may be tackling in your life you can find a devotional that will help uplift your spirt, shift your mindset OR help you learn something new.
